Curriculum

ESL

There are no minimum requirements in English language proficiency at John Paul College. Students' levels of English are assessed on arrival. They are then placed in an ESL course at an appropriate level. The school runs an intensive ESL programme to teach students who are beginners.

Most international students follow a special programme, the primary aim of which is to develop their skills in English. Students are integrated into mainstream classes as their standard of English improves.

Subjects

In NZ students can choose from a wide range of subjects. English, Maths and Science are normally compulsory. A wide range of academic and practical subjects are offered. Foreign languages taught include French, German, Japanese and Mandarin.

Qualifications

In Years 11-13 NZ students sit a national qualification called the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

Year 11 - Level 1

Year 12 - Level 2

Year 13 - Level 3

This qualification is assessed both externally in national exams and internally at the various schools. Depending on their English ability international students will do part or all of this qualifications.

Students with sufficient English can qualify for NZ University Entrance by passing NCEA Level 3. For students who wish to go to university in other countries we can help with preperations for IELTS, TOEIC and SAT.

A student must have a New Zealand visa before they can be enrolled in any educational institution. The selected institution is named on the visa, and if a student chooses to leave their place of study, their visa is cancelled.

2. Fee of $220.00.
3. Letter from school offering a place to the applicant.
4. Fee receipt showing that school fees have been paid.

New Zealand Education System

It is compulsory in New Zealand for children to start school from the age of 6 years. The current school system is broken into five areas as follows:

Pre School Ages 3 to 5 years
Primary School Ages 5 to 11 years
Intermediate School Ages 11 to 13 years
High School Ages 13 to 18 years
Tertiary Study Ages 18 years and above

Overseas students are welcomed into all courses where places are available. However, there are occasions when the course requested by a student is full, and no further places are available for that year. Should this happen, John Paul College will enrol the student into another suitable course where possible.

New Zealand schools are regulated by the government, and all courses are issued with a government certificate. This assures a consistently high standard of education for all students.
